You speak of dreams you had as a boy.
Why not pursue them, I ask.
You have responsibilities, you say.
You'll catch up with your dreams later.

Why don't you do something for yourself
Your life is spent in work
You'll do all that someday
When you retire, later.

Then a day comes, when it is too late.
Images flash before you-
Not those of the life you lived,
But of the one you didn't.

I come visit your grave after the funeral
To talk to you after all these years.
Until I realize that you had stopped existing.
I had always thought we would catch up later...

What a wonderful thing it is!
When strangers become friends,
And you can talk to them so effortlessly
As if you've known them forever.

What a terrible thing however,
When friends become strangers,
And you walk on by, without saying hi,
You just don't know what to say anymore.

According to Plan

When the plans you make go to waste
When you work so hard only to fail
Think of that time
When it rained on your parade
And you chose to dance in the raindrops instead

When things don't go your way
Remember that tomorrow's another day
And consider this-
If everything always went according to plan
Surprises would never exist!

A parasitic worm
It enters your brain
Through your ears

Whispering hateful words
"What if you're not good enough?"
"What if you fail?"

It feeds on your fears
And the words of "Others"
It gets bigger and bigger

Whispering vile words
"What if you're missing out?"
"What if you chose poorly?"

It burrows through your mind
Gnawing at your brain cells
Eating away at your imagination

Whispering evil words
"What if all goes wrong?"
"What if no-one cares?"

Total domination
Now it's time to spread further
None shall be spared

I confess to the crime.
It was me, I killed time!
As surely as I stabbed him with a knife
I. Killed. Time.

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock

And I've been sentenced to life
In the prison of stress and regret.
(My punishment for murder
By the weapon of procrastination.)

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock

For he who kills time
Brings upon him a deadly curse.
Chronos will have his revenge-
Father time does not forgive.

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock

I am now doomed
To be haunted forever
Chasing the ghost of lost time.
I'll never catch up.

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock

A Stormy Brain

You've heard of a storm in a teacup
But never a storm in a head
You have seen it however
Everyone has
The brain that goes on, the mind that won't quit
Moving like a whirlwind
Trying to do the impossible
Stretching time so thin you fear it might break
Travelling at the speed of light
Trying to make it stop still
You wonder how they do it, and why
But then you'll see them again
On a rare occasion
At peace after a stormy day
And you will know why
You will envy them
For they'll look like they've found the meaning of life
But the next day will begin the same way as the last
And they will once again be going too fast

Your eyes sparkle with excitement,
An uncontainable smile on your lips.
So eager to share with the world
The joy of what you love most.

How wonderful it must be!
To feel a passion so strong.
And to know your calling.
Most can only dream.

The voice of insecurity

Do you ever feel left out-
like you don't belong anywhere,
and you never will?

Ever worry that you might
be forcing your company
on people who don't want it?

Do you feel like you're missing out?
That surely everyone in the world
is having more fun than you are?

Are you afraid that
nobody would even notice
if you stopped existing?

And that perhaps the world would be better off...

Or is it just me?

Curiosity is...

The need to know,
To question Why,
And to discover How.
To never be satisfied.

It is the answer to ignorance,
The spark that ignites genius,
And the oxygen that keeps it burning
Like the flames of a thirst unquenchable.

Note: It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. Then curiosity, to me, is the mother of all discovery. The one common thread among scientists is that they keep alive their child-like curiosity. All children are born curious, but if they don't get answers, they soon stop asking questions. And this is the real tragedy of growing up.

I wake up and look at the mirror
And find the real me staring back.
"It's been a long time since we met.
You too have fallen for the act."
It is true I realize.

Perhaps one day I shall be brave enough
To let the world see me
And not what I want them to see,
Nor what they want me to be.
And I won't be scared anymore.

But it is not this day.
Today I don my mask,
Fake a smile, put on an act,
And turn to face the audience again.
It's just easier this way.

Note: Yes, the line "But it is not this day" is indeed a reference to Aragorn's speech from the movie The Return of the King.

Something New

Tried something new today.
I was scared, I was excited-
I was alive!

Struck it off my list of regrets.
I'll never be done.
But I'll never give up.

Why live yesterday all over again?
Its memories will linger on.
I'll make new ones today.

Some came and left too soon.
I had no time for them,
And now it's too late.
Somehow, I miss what might have been.

Others came and stayed a while.
But I took them for granted.
And now all that's left is a hole
I keep trying to fill with fading memories.

Some, though, are right here and yet far away.
I wish some things never changed.
Tears for farewells that shouldn't be,
Here's to the people we used to be.

Growing up

I thought grown-ups were responsible, wiser
Until I turned 18, and received no primer.

Freedom was the prize offered for our patience,
But grown-ups have no time for such indulgence.

Wonder and curiosity are for dreamers, they say
We have to go about the business of money and survival, okay?

They lose their optimism and dream too small,
Close their minds and trust no one at all.

Quick to judge, too quick to hate,
Slow to smile, scared to make a new mate.

If this is growing up, I think I'll pass,
No thanks, I say, I'll stay a wee lass.

This quote by Shaw sums it up nicely:

"We don't stop playing because we grow old;

we grow old because we stop playing."

I shall not ask for my rights
They aren’t yours to give
They’re mine to take
So rise, my brothers and sisters
And march forth to take what’s yours
What was never theirs to take away
We shall not wait for approval, nor for permission
We’re done waiting, asking, pleading
Haven’t we waited enough, haven’t we had enough?
The time for words is long past
This time, it’s war.

But wait!
Said a lone voice
Before you take up arms
Consider what I have to say
How can you fight hate with more hate?
As long as you hold bitterness in your hearts
And the desire to cause harm,
How are you better than them?
Show them love, show them kindess
Show them reason, and they will see
There is no sword more powerful than a word
Let that word be peace.

Be yourself

I don't know yet
who I shall grow up to be,
All I know is
I want to be no-one but me.

We have an opportunity
to bring to this world
miracles it has never seen,
ideas it has never heard.

Why be like everyone else- they already exist!
so you be you and I'll be me.
We'll each paint our own story,
and look what a colorful world it'll be!

Inspired by Oscar Wilde: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

The right to dream

Do not judge my hardened eyes
For they too see dreams
But mine will never come alive
Because I am a poor woman.

I do not belong in their world, they said
I come from the slums, they said
Here I was born, here I shall die.
Just as countless before me.

Perhaps they're right- But wait!
Who gave them the right
To tell me who I am
And who I should be?

I have but one life:
I won't let my past decide my future.
I shall break free, I shall fly
I shall do, Or I shall die.

Comfort Zone

You go about your day
Slumbering through the beat of life
Like a muggle unaware
Of all the magic that surrounds you.

Then suddenly one day
Something comes around
That jolts you alive
And makes you think.

A dream, an epiphany, a realization!
But you are afraid of change
So you close your eyes
And fall asleep - comfortable once more.

Paradise is mine
as I walk down the lane
in my mind's company.

Birds sing to me
in sweet words I don't understand.
I need no-one else.

Do not pity me
for I am happy by myself.
I need no saving.

Nothing else compares
to the worlds dreamed up
within my stormy brain.

But you will never know.

Because no-one listens to the sound
of bare feet dancing
alone on the sands of time.

Life has passed me by

Green meadows beckon to me
As I make my way to work.
I haven't the time to stop.
For life might pass me by.

Russet leaves fall around me
As I look out my hospital window.
I haven't the time to watch.
For life has passed me by.

Merchants sell candy
to well-heeled kids on city streets.
Bare feet walk past - carefully ignored.

Paradise is

Paradise is
A book that tickles your mind
Reminiscing about the good old days
An aha moment
Dreams that won't let you sleep
Ideas that hit you like a brick
Swimming underneath the stars
Eden is right here, if only you know where to look

Life, as I see it.

Why so serious?
It's not that complicated-
really not that big a deal.
This thing we call life
is nothing but a quest.

A quest for what?
Glad you asked!
For here I shall reveal to you
the meaning of life as I know it.
It is happiness.

To be happy is to be alive,
for every moment spent unhappy
is a moment wasted-
An opportunity for joy lost,
A part of this short, precious life squandered.

Perhaps that was too dramatic.
To be perfectly honest,
Life is nothing but an accident of chemistry.
So here's my philosophy-
Why not enjoy it while it lasts?

The Mind wanders, as Man wonders
And Imagination roams free.
To a world of fancy and fantasy
To temporary insanity

Many a great idea was born here,
Many an hour wasted.
Many a fear met and conquered,
The thrill of adventure tasted.

In this realm of dreams, I reign supreme
Don’t pull me out of my reverie
For here I fly, oh, so high
And the rules don't apply to me.

A Haiku is a poem that gives to the reader a glimpse of a scene. The rest is left to interpretation. It generally, though not necessarily, contains three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables.

Here is my first attempt.

Birds soar as moonlight
shines through the bars of a cage
locked from the inside.
