Growing up

I thought grown-ups were responsible, wiser
Until I turned 18, and received no primer.

Freedom was the prize offered for our patience,
But grown-ups have no time for such indulgence.

Wonder and curiosity are for dreamers, they say
We have to go about the business of money and survival, okay?

They lose their optimism and dream too small,
Close their minds and trust no one at all.

Quick to judge, too quick to hate,
Slow to smile, scared to make a new mate.

If this is growing up, I think I'll pass,
No thanks, I say, I'll stay a wee lass.

This quote by Shaw sums it up nicely:

"We don't stop playing because we grow old;

we grow old because we stop playing."

Revolution

I shall not ask for my rights
They aren’t yours to give
They’re mine to take
So rise, my brothers and sisters
And march forth to take what’s yours
What was never theirs to take away
We shall not wait for approval, nor for permission
We’re done waiting, asking, pleading
Haven’t we waited enough, haven’t we had enough?
The time for words is long past
This time, it’s war.

But wait!
Said a lone voice
Before you take up arms
Consider what I have to say
How can you fight hate with more hate?
As long as you hold bitterness in your hearts
And the desire to cause harm,
How are you better than them?
Show them love, show them kindess
Show them reason, and they will see
There is no sword more powerful than a word
Let that word be peace.

Be yourself

I don't know yet
who I shall grow up to be,
All I know is
I want to be no-one but me.

We have an opportunity
to bring to this world
miracles it has never seen,
ideas it has never heard.

Why be like everyone else- they already exist!
so you be you and I'll be me.
We'll each paint our own story,
and look what a colorful world it'll be!

Inspired by Oscar Wilde: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

The right to dream

Do not judge my hardened eyes
For they too see dreams
But mine will never come alive
Because I am a poor woman.

I do not belong in their world, they said
I come from the slums, they said
Here I was born, here I shall die.
Just as countless before me.

Perhaps they're right- But wait!
Who gave them the right
To tell me who I am
And who I should be?

I have but one life:
I won't let my past decide my future.
I shall break free, I shall fly
I shall do, Or I shall die.

Comfort Zone

You go about your day
Slumbering through the beat of life
Like a muggle unaware
Of all the magic that surrounds you.

Then suddenly one day
Something comes around
That jolts you alive
And makes you think.

A dream, an epiphany, a realization!
But you are afraid of change
So you close your eyes
And fall asleep - comfortable once more.
